Lake Mburo National Park is perfect for guided walking safaris which offer you the opportunity to get close to the various wildlife animals while on foot.
Lake Mburo National Park is situated in the western part of Uganda requiring travelers to embark on a three to four hours’ drive from Kampala via the Mbarara highway.
En-route, you shall have views of the green terrain, bird species as well as lunch. On these safaris, you shall watch various wildlife animals like lions, elephants as they wander around their natural vegetation habitat.

Typical Walking Safari Routes at Lake Mburo
At Lake Mburo National Park are many trails travelers can follow to enjoy the best adventures and these include;
1. Salt Lick Walk (Miriti / Rwonyo Area)
One of the most popular walking safari options, this trail leads you toward a natural salt-lick where herbivores like zebras, impalas, and waterbucks congregate to lick mineral-rich soil. By arriving on foot, you avoid engine noise and can observe wildlife in quieter, more natural behavior.
2. Ruroko Track Loop
This trail traverses a mix of grassland, sparse woodland and rocky outcrops. It’s excellent for spotting shy antelopes like eland and topi, and offers a sense of “classic savannah walking” with termite mounds, medicinal plant species and sweeping views.
3. Kigambira Hill Trail
A moderate hike up Kigambira Hill rewards walkers with panoramic views over Lake Mburo, wetlands and savannah plains. This trail is especially rich in bird life and provides scenic photographic moments.
4. Rubanga Forest Walk
For a change of pace, guided walks through the Rubanga forest block (western edge of the park) explore shady woodlands rich in birds and smaller mammals. You are required to do special arrangement and advance booking.
Timing, Duration and Best Season
Walking safaris at Lake Mburo National Park are exceptional and take place early in the morning (around 6:30–7:00 am) and late afternoon (around 4:00 pm)when animals are most active and temperatures are cooler. The walks usually last about 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the route, physical fitness and pace.
The dry season is very ideal for all travelers on these walking safaris and this happens in the months of December to February as well as June to August. They are very rewarding to all as the wildlife animals concentrate around water sources and trails are less muddy.

Lake Mburo National Park includes of ecosystems which vary from grassland to wetland and woodlands. The wildlife animals you watch on the walking safaris include; Zebras, Impalas, Elands, Topis, Buffaloes, Waterbucks, Leopard as well as various species of birds i.e over 350 species which include; papyrus specialists and raptors.
Costs and Booking Information
Walking safari permits are administered by UWA and typically cost around USD 15 per person for both foreign residents and non-residents, with reduced rates for East African citizens (around UGX 10,000). Walks should be booked in advance through the park office or via your lodge/tour operator.
