Detailed Itinerary of the 6 Days Lake Mburo Wildlife Safari

Day 1: Arrival and First Glimpse

Morning: Depart from Kampala or Entebbe. Stop at the Equator crossing for refreshments and a brief history of the landmark. Afternoon: Enter the park and check into your accommodation. Take a moment to appreciate the views of the acacia woodland. Evening: A slow introductory game drive to spot the park’s famous zebras and impalas as the sun sets.

Day 2: Guided Walking Safari

Morning: Set out on a guided bush walk. This is a rare opportunity to stand just meters away from giraffes and elands without the barrier of a vehicle. Afternoon: Head to the water for a boat safari. You will likely see hippos, crocodiles, and various kingfishers along the shoreline. Evening: Relax at your lodge and listen to the sounds of the African night.

Day 3: Panoramic Views and Night Game Drives

Morning: Hike up to the Kazuma Lookout point. From the summit, you can see the network of lakes and the vast savannah stretching toward the horizon. Afternoon: Drive through the Kigambira Loop, focusing on the wooded areas where leopards often rest in the branches. Night: Embark on a night game drive. This is the best time to look for nocturnal species like hyenas, pottos, and white-tailed mongooses.

Day 4: Enjoy the Ankole Cultural Experience

Morning: Visit a local homestead to learn about the Ankole long-horned cattle. Activity: Experience the daily life of the Bahima people, including traditional milking techniques and the process of making local ghee. Afternoon: Visit the Igongo Cultural Center just outside the park to explore the museum dedicated to South Western Uganda’s heritage.

Day 5: Explore the Wilderness on horseback

Morning: Take part in a horseback safari. Animals perceive horses as non-threatening, allowing you to blend into the herds for a unique perspective. Afternoon: Explore the park’s periphery on a mountain bike, cycling through local paths and seeing how wildlife and humans coexist. Evening: Spend time at the park’s salt lick, a natural mineral point that attracts a high concentration of animals.

Day 6: Bird Watching and Departure

Morning: Explore Rubanga Forest. This small but dense forest provides a habitat for specialized bird species and primates like the vervet monkey. Afternoon: Visit a local community project or craft center. Learn how local residents utilize sustainable materials to create art and household goods. Exit the park and stop for lunch in Mbarara before beginning the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.
