Biking and Cycling at Park
Biking and Cycling at Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most exciting ways to explore wildlife, landscapes and nature up close.
Lake Mburo National Park is located in the Western part of Uganda with rolling savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, small lakes, and abundant wildlife. While traditional game drives remain popular, cycle safaris and guided biking experiences have emerged as one of the most immersive and eco-friendly ways to enjoy the park’s rich biodiversity and scenery.
Why Cycling at Lake Mburo Is Unique
Unlike many other parks in East Africa, Lake Mburo is particularly suited to bicycle safaris because it is one of the smaller parks making it easier to explore by bike as you transfer along the varied terrain ranging from open savannah plains to gentle valleys and woodland fringes.
On these safaris, you shall bond with nature and wildlife. Bikes don’t disturb animals as much as cars do, offering opportunities for gentle encounters and superb photography. Cycling also aligns with eco-tourism principles, reducing carbon emissions and letting you experience the park’s sounds, scents, and rhythms firsthand.
Types of Cycling Experiences
Guided Cycling Safaris Inside the Park
Guided bicycle tours usually start either from Nshara Gate or just inside the park boundary near lodges like Hyena Hill Lodge, Mihingo Lodge.
These guided tours are led by experienced ranger guides, who enhances both safety and wildlife interpretation as well as help you choose safe trails, share insights on the animals and plants you encounter and navigate wildlife areas.
These usually take a period of 1 to 3 hours depending on the route and your pace. On these walks, you shall watch wildlife animals like zebras, impalas, elands, topis, waterbucks and giraffes.
You shall also watch bird species i.e more than 350 bird species in Lake Mburo around the wetlands and open plains.
Popular Cycling Trails & Routes
The park and its surrounding areas offer varied cycling experiences, from shorter circuits to longer scenic trails:
Impala Circuit
A longer route that takes a period of 30 kms meandering through savannah grasslands offering panoramic views of Lake Mburo, large herds and birdlife.
Zebra Circuit
This route is an 8 kms ride through open woodland and grassland areas where zebras and topis are commonly seen grazing nearby.
Kazuma & Ruroko Trails
Shorter but rewarding trails offering hilltop viewpoints, scenic panoramas, and wildlife sightings. The Ruroko Trail especially showcases open plains and woodland mosaics.
Salt Lick & Lake Shore Routes
Some operators, like cycling specialists, take riders to salt lick areas where animals congregate, or along the lake shore for birding and hippo-spotting opportunities.
Best Times for Cycling
Dry Season (June–September; December–February)
Trails are firm and dry which makes cycling easier and wildlife more concentrated near water sources ideal for sightings.
Wet Season (–May; OctoberMarch–November)
The landscape becomes lush and vibrant, though trails might be muddy and more challenging for biking.
Early mornings and late afternoons are often best — cooler temperatures, greater wildlife activity, and soft light for photography.
