Walking safaris and nature walks
These re guided journeys and they require one to be with an armed ranger at all times incase of anything and both are great activities that one can indulge into where you get to trek to the salt lick ,a natural saline water hole where various animals gather or hike to the Kazuma lookout for a panoramic view of the parks five lakes for the more stunning views of the park’s five lakes .Walking around you to track smaller
. Walking allows you to track smaller wildlife and study animal spoors and flora in a way that is impossible from a vehicle.
Horse back riding safaris
This is operated primarily by Mihingo Lodge, this is one of the only places in East Africa where you can view wildlife on horseback. Horses are seen as non-threatening by zebras and antelopes, allowing riders to get remarkably close to herds. Options range from one-hour rides to multi-day overnight camping treks across the savannah.
Mountain biking and cycling
This is a guided cycling tours offer a thrilling way to explore the park’s well-established tracks. You can ride through the flat valley bottoms alongside impalas, giraffes, and zebras. The experience is tailored to your fitness level, with both leisurely 1-hour rides and more challenging hilly trails available.
Day and night game drives
This is a standard activity that can be done at the park where you get to explore the whole network of the animals the likes of the Zebra Track and Kigambira Loop. However, the night game drives are particularly famous here; using high-powered spotlights, you have a high probability of spotting leopards, hyenas, bushbabies, and pottos that remain hidden during the day.
Boat cruises
Taking a boat on Lake Mburo is essential for seeing the park’s aquatic residents. These two-hour trips depart from the Rwonyo jetty and offer close-up views of hippos, massive Nile crocodiles, and a variety of water birds. It is often the highlight for photographers seeking a different perspective of the landscape.
Spot fishing
This is a designated activity and for one to do it you will need a permit where you can catch fish and then throw it back into the lake at Mazinga and it allows visitors to engage in cook fishing and the fish contains six fish species, with tilapia being the most common.
Birdwatching
The park has over 350 species where Rubaga Forest and the Warukiri swamp are the top spots. Specialist boat trips can also be arranged specifically to track the rare African Finfoot or the elusive Shoebill Stork in the papyrus fringes.
Cultural activities
Largely the park shares its borders with local cattle-keeping communities, you can visit the Ankole Cultural Centre near Sanga Gate. Here, you can learn about the history of the Bahima people, participate in the milking of the iconic long-horned Ankole cattle, and observe traditional ghee-making and handicraft production.
